Thought of the Week- End of Life

I have been volunteering with Hospice Care for the past 2 years. This month, I lost a dear patient whom I worked with closely for the last 6 months. We just celebrated his 88th birthday. We met because he requested a volunteer who would come and teach him meditation and sit with him. We met weekly. We would check on each other for a few minutes, read something together, reflect on it and then sit together quietly. It was usually an hour visit. Cyril taught me so many things, here are a few: Connection can happen with someone I don't know at all. We can relate to anyone, doesn't matter age, color or religion.(We were opposites in so many ways)....

Thought of the Week- Missing Home

Greetings from Israel, Reflecting on things has helped me clear a thought that I have had since being in Israel the last two weeks with family and friends. I'm feeling at home here enjoying a communal vibe that Israelis are so good at sharing while equally feeling the aggression and sometimes violence that is in the air. People honk here all the time, waitresses tell you what you should order from the menu, and strangers will pat a pregnant woman's belly in the supermarket telling her how cute she is without asking her first. It's all common, acceptable, and the norm in Israel. However I love the blend...I love the warmth, and the spontaneous behavior I feel next to the...

The Message Carried by Clothes

Don't ask what clothes can do for you - ask what they tell the world about you! Lately, the Canadian MP Justin Trudo, set the media on fire when he showed up for a meeting with Ireland's MP, in a severe suit & tie, while the twist in the narrative were his socks. Star War socks in mis-matching colors! This had nothing to do with chance. This was a well thought out styling message. According to Maslow's Pyramid of Needs, socks would be at the bottom of the pyramid & used as a necessity against the Canadian weather conditions. At the very top of this pyramid, these socks are symbols of success, self expression, & creativity. When Lady Gaga chose...

Thought of the Week - Yael's Family

My daughter Ruth just turned 18. This ended 10 years of me raising my 2 kids as a single mother. My son will be 21 in September. I will be 50 next year. They are both quite independent and happy kids. So many strong feelings around it. I am proud, sad, happy and looking forward to the next chapter of their lives. Growing up in Israel, kids stay kids longer. We don't go to sleep away camps growing up and we don't leave our homes until we are at least 22. America is full of freedom. Kids at 18 are starting their own lives, away from home. It is quite fascinating and sometimes hard to grasp for me. I am...
